Senator McCain, DISAVOW Pastor Hagee NOW

Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain NEEDS to publicly disavow the recent endorsement by notorious anti-Catholic televangelist John Hagee, who refers to the Catholicism as an Apostate Church. This rhetoric would NOT have been tolerated had Hagee made similar remarks about Judaism or Islam. Ironically, Senator McCain can glibly say he separates himself from some of Hagee's religious convictions and opinions.

Catholics should put the Senator on notice that our vote is not 'presumed' and he should remember another famous Republican from Arizona who once said moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue (Barry Goldwater). One cannot tolerate or give a blind eye to such injustice as bigotry. Had a racist remark been made by a political backer, McCain would have rightly repudiated and disavowed himself not only from the remark but also from its source. Likewise, the would-be president for 2008 should rebuke Hagee PERIOD.

He already has:

"Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee's views, which I obviously do not.

"I am hopeful that Catholics, Protestants and all people of faith who share my vision for the future of America will respond to our message of defending innocent life, traditional marriage, and compassion for the most vulnerable in our society."

Sadly, it is not enough to disavow only the anti-Catholic sentiments. Senator McCain must disavow the SOURCE itself, i.e., John Hagee. Notorious anti-Catholics are like racists and anti-Semites. Their opinions and comments are so part of their persona that they cannot be separated. Until Hagee recants or apologizes for his vitriolic hate speech, then McCain (and any politician for that matter) must DISTANCE themselves from the man as well as from his comments.
