Like a breath of fresh air, no, not the creche (which is naturally beautiful) but the Tabernacle located directly behind the altar. I'm not exactly considered old, but it takes me back to my altar boying days since the Tabernacle was located where it belongs, front & center.

#1544, "Order for the Blessing of A Christmas Manger or Nativity Scene" "If the manger is set up in the church, it must not be placed in the presbyterium. A place should be chosen that is suitable for prayer and devotion and is easily accessible by the faithful."

The Book of Blessings is "Approved for use in the dioceses of the United States of America by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and confirmed by the Apostolic See." 1989

Logistically, the only place "that is suitable for prayer and devotion and is easily accessible by the faithful" is directly in front of he altar. My church holds slightly over 125 persons and the sanctuary is very small. The option is to either keep it where it is or not display the creche at all. Last January (2010) I noticed many churches in Rome had nativity sets in the sanctuary.
